So I've decided to just try and update here and that way I have a good record of what the kids have learned this year. I'm obviously awful at keeping records... I'm to busy doing school! LOL!
Okay, the kids are now aged 12,11, and 9. It is may 2014. They are growing and growing both physically and mentally.
For school this year we have done a ton of work. Lots of learning! Good hard facts! For history we continued using Story of the World. It is incredibly good. I really like how it is easy to read and you learn so many facts, I have been learning so much!! Some of the things we learned about are nomads, ancient Egypt, Sumeria, Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Africa, etc and we really, really enjoyed learning even more about Egypt, we watched a lot of documentaries and we read encylopedias, etc, We just loved getting to dive into any subject we wanted, further and further.
Another part of history we did, was to really dive into early American history. We enjoyed that a lot. We watched " History of US" which is like a seven hour documentary, we broke it up and then went and learned more about each of the different parts. We did some Missouri State study this year too, which is something we will continue to do this summer as we explore our state!
Science this year was eclectic. We did Abeka for the grade levels, which is really really good stuff. Dylan has been doing 7th grade Abeka, Order and Reality. He already knew it... it was boring to him, but I was afraid I would miss something in teaching him, so I made him do it over again. He's only 12. He also did Apologia Anatomy and Physiology, with the girls. We all did that together, we are almost done with it, it is sooooo good. So in depth. The human body is amazing. God is great. The girls worked on Abeka 5th grade, Investigating God's World. They loved it, especially the chapters on animals, etc. They also did the Apologia Anatomy and Physiology. They did amazing. I was so proud of them, because it was really hard stuff! It's at least 7th grade or up.... and they grasped it so well! We also did lots of neat experiments, watched documentaries, and we went outside and investigated and learned about everything! It was wonderful!
For language arts the girls used God's Gift of Language Writing and Grammar from Abeka. They did amazing. So many hard things for grammar and they just excelled in it.
Literature this year was Abeka 7th grade Of People. All three kids did this program and they loved it. I love the poetry and the selections from classic books and they did a lot of writing etc, with this program.
Math this year was a combination of Saxon math and Khan Academy online. I really like the Khan Academy because they watch a video, do practice questions and once they have the concept they progress to the next level. Dylan especially is progressing quite well. He has always been very good at math. Khan Academy is good for him because he does a lot of work in his head and this program is good at that. He can grasp the concept the way he needs to and then progress.
We did a lot of Gospel lessons, Scripture Study, studying different art pieces and also doing all kinds of art projects ourselves! All three kids started piano lessons and theory and music lessons. I do want to have them complete the music appreciation course from the Home Education Council of America.
So far this year, I am just incredibly proud of my kids! They are doing amazing and sooooooo smart! I'm just incredibly proud! :) Love, JL~
