school update november 2015

The kids are rocking school this year! They are doing so freaking amazing I'm so proud of them. so... we ended up adding in easy peasy history for the girls, and then we added in zoology. They are doing amazing with it. Dylan is still doing the CLEP early American history and biology and he is doing sooo good. I was so surprised at how well he is grasping things that are college level. It's hard and yet he's doing great. He's been doing math through algebra-class.com and it's helping him so much with making sure he is perfectly able to go straight through all of the concepts of algebra so he can be ready for algebra II soon. Maybe at the beginning of summer , we'll see. He's doing great. The girls are still working on basics so that they can fly right through their math once it comes in the mail. We have decided to order it for Christmas.. they will be doing life of fred and workbooks to compliment it. For now we are working on basics so that they will know what to do easily and quickly and smoothly. Marlee still struggles with math big time- but that is due to autism and learning disabilities and we are just super thankful that she is way ahead in every other subject! Seriously that girl is a beast when it comes to school! She will sit down and focus and knock out a couple of days at a time and she loves it! Im very proud of her. Syd is doing amazing with 6th grade. I still can't believe my baby is doing 6th grade work. Plus some 8th grade for history and zoology. Zoology is her absolute favorite and she is so good at it! It's right up her alley as she loves animals so much. The work is hard, it's 8th grade work and their are a lot of classification charts etc.. but she is doing just awesome with it and barely ever asks questions. When I check through her work and do our little weekly review etc ... I'm just amazed! All three kids are completely comprehending all of their work and doing amazing.

We will be adding in a writing and comp class for Dylan soon, and then we will add in piano/music and art two days a week soon. We will continue to work hard through November and then December we take off every year to do service projects and read etc and enjoy Christmas time.

school 2015-2016

Trying to find a way to keep records easily. The kids are 14,13, and 11 now. :) Dylan is a freshman in high school !!! Marlee is doing 8th grade in everything but math- I'm so incredibly impressed with her. She wasn't supposed to be able to even read or potty train. And look at her! Syd is doing 6th grade. I'm so proud of them.

Dylan is doing early morning seminary monday thru friday from 6:15 until 7:20 am. He loves it so much. It's amazing for him. He has his best friends, he loves the schedule of getting up each morning and having the routine of doing work each morning and doing his work before bed for the next morning. He loves being challenged with the work and study. I think I can use that as a credit for school also.... I will have to look into that. There is writing and speeches and memorization etc... and it's for four years all school year long. hmm.....
He also finished his very first high school credit which was a computer programming course through khan academy and it was a 8 week course he did over the summer. It was called 'Intro to JavaScript' and he finished with flying colors! He is going to go on to the Advanced JavaScript course soon, but wanted to get a good hang on his regular school work first especially since he is taking two CLEP level courses.
Ok, so he's also doing allinonehighschool.com and his work load this semester is CLEP level Biology which is 10th grade level, CLEP level Early American History which is actually 10th grade level, 9th grade English Literature and Composition, His math is reviewing Pre-Algebra and will be starting Algebra 1 soon. I wanted to make sure he had a perfect foundation before he starts all of his huge high school math classes because he will be doing college level math. He is reviewing pre-algebra and other basics through khan academy, algebra-class.com and shelovesmath.com lots of work!!!! I'm also having the kids each read a literature book at all times. Dylan just finished The Giver. He loved it. He's reading a series right now.. and then after that series we will continue with 9th grade literature books. If they can keep him interested. All of my kids read on college levels so I have to be picky with books because they've already read so many great classics etc .... something I've always been big on! Making sure they are constantly reading classics. For PE- Dylan has been running, lifting weights, and doing different exercises through pe online. He is also doing cursive worksheets to encourage nice penmanship- even though cursive isn't required anymore, I still want my kids to have excellent penmanship. Dylan has excellent handwriting but hates cursive so I'm making him practice more ;) I think that's it for now.

Marlee is doing 8th grade through allinonehomeschool.com and also some from ambleside online. She is plowing through and I can't believe how much school work she completes each day! She is constantly wanting to add more... she's always been this way ever since she learned how to read. it just opened up a new world for her. Right now she is doing math, spanish 1, vocabulary, reading, writing, grammar, early american history, zoology, and music. She also does cursive, copywork, and reads literature books. She just finished A Wrinkle in Time.

Syd is doing 6th grade through allinonehomeschool.com she is doing great! She doesn't like poetry tho hahahaha! She is doing math, Spanish 1, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, early american history, zoology, music, and art. She does cursive, copywork and reads literaturebooks. She just finished Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. :)

We do gospel together as a family.

School 2013-2014

So I've decided to just try and update here and that way I have a good record of what the kids have learned this year. I'm obviously awful at keeping records... I'm to busy doing school! LOL!

Okay, the kids are now aged 12,11, and 9. It is may 2014. They are growing and growing both physically and mentally.

For school this year we have done a ton of work. Lots of learning! Good hard facts! For history we continued using Story of the World. It is incredibly good. I really like how it is easy to read and you learn so many facts, I have been learning so much!! Some of the things we learned about are nomads, ancient Egypt, Sumeria, Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Africa, etc and we really, really enjoyed learning even more about Egypt, we watched a lot of documentaries and we read encylopedias, etc, We just loved getting to dive into any subject we wanted, further and further.
Another part of history we did, was to really dive into early American history. We enjoyed that a lot. We watched " History of US" which is like a seven hour documentary, we broke it up and then went and learned more about each of the different parts. We did some Missouri State study this year too, which is something we will continue to do this summer as we explore our state!

Science this year was eclectic. We did Abeka for the grade levels, which is really really good stuff. Dylan has been doing 7th grade Abeka, Order and Reality. He already knew it... it was boring to him, but I was afraid I would miss something in teaching him, so I made him do it over again. He's only 12. He also did Apologia Anatomy and Physiology, with the girls. We all did that together, we are almost done with it, it is sooooo good. So in depth. The human body is amazing. God is great. The girls worked on Abeka 5th grade, Investigating God's World. They loved it, especially the chapters on animals, etc. They also did the Apologia Anatomy and Physiology. They did amazing. I was so proud of them, because it was really hard stuff! It's at least 7th grade or up.... and they grasped it so well! We also did lots of neat experiments, watched documentaries, and we went outside and investigated and learned about everything! It was wonderful!

For language arts the girls used God's Gift of Language Writing and Grammar from Abeka. They did amazing. So many hard things for grammar and they just excelled in it.

Literature this year was Abeka 7th grade Of People. All three kids did this program and they loved it. I love the poetry and the selections from classic books and they did a lot of writing etc, with this program.

Math this year was a combination of Saxon math and Khan Academy online. I really like the Khan Academy because they watch a video, do practice questions and once they have the concept they progress to the next level. Dylan especially is progressing quite well. He has always been very good at math. Khan Academy is good for him because he does a lot of work in his head and this program is good at that. He can grasp the concept the way he needs to and then progress.

We did a lot of Gospel lessons, Scripture Study, studying different art pieces and also doing all kinds of art projects ourselves! All three kids started piano lessons and theory and music lessons. I do want to have them complete the music appreciation course from the Home Education Council of America.

So far this year, I am just incredibly proud of my kids! They are doing amazing and sooooooo smart! I'm just incredibly proud! :) Love, JL~

October 2012

I have obviously been AWFUL at keeping up records with school. I am bad about that every year! This year so far we have been working on Story of the World for history... it's really really exciting. I love how they make it a fun interesting story... we have really enjoyed it. Learning about ancient Egypt etc right now.

For science we are doing Apologia anatomy and physiology and supplementing it with hecoa.com's Human Body System's.. its an online class, very very interesting!

For language arts the kids are doing hecoa.com's grammar extended and parts of speech online courses. Very in depth and we like it alot.

Math is good ole Saxon Math... it's seriously the best.

Then of course we have gospel and character traits/virtue.... we are working on going thru President Hinckleys Be's. Then we will go on to memorizing the articles of faith. We are working on compassion and reading beautiful poems etc on it for character traits/virtue. Oh and we are listening to one conference talk a day.

Plus there is cursive writing which Dylan hates but the girls are loving ( dylan is actually super great at it.. he just hates it lol!) and spelling words :)

hoping to start daily piano lessons once i get the playroom all cleaned and organized and can get to my piano :)

Each kiddo is reading a book for literature too... Dylan is reading the hobbit, marlee and syd are reading little house on the prairie books :)

A Fresh New School Year

I am so excited! New schoolbooks came in the mail today... we went school supply shopping, the table is all cleaned off, you know what that means! A fresh new school year! Last year I was awful at keeping up the blog ( you can see it here at www.kaylorhomeschool2011.blogspot.com ) but this year, it is my goal to keep up with recording the things we have accomplished, so that I can use this as records and also just a great reminder of all the things we've done!

The kids are getting excited, well the girls are. Dylan is still in love with summer and doesn't want it to end. The girls are like me, they are ready for a schedule and schoolwork! I have been planning and getting things ready. I always look forward to starting school each year, but I also have that little nagging feeling that I won't have any freedom for the next 9 months... school takes everything I have. No more lazy summer days reading and watching the kids play outside. No more sleeping in ( not that that happens alot, but still, i might have the option in the summer lol). No more pinterest until the evening time... will I live??? You bet I will! See I signed up for this job. I know this is right for my family. I am committed to making sure that my children are raised to the best of my ability. So here we go! School starts monday! I will be back on here then to record what we have accomplished! :)
